Running for the 5th year, the N.E.X.T Challenge 2010 promises to be more FUN & EXCITING!!!

Participants, in teams of 5, will put their endurance, creativity and teamwork spirit to test through the many challenges and obstacles to race against time.

Teams need to use their wits and strategic planning skills to get through the various checkpoints around Northeast.

Fees: $35 (Inclusive of rental of kayaks)

Difficulty Level: Beginner – Intermediate
Length of Expedition: 4 – 6 Hours of kayaking with rest
Terrain: Rough waters, Exposure to sun

No-go Criteria: (Please Read!)
1. Adverse weather with thunderstorm and lightning
2. Participants fail to submit all relevant documents (Medical Declaration, and Indemnity Form), which have to be duly completed and signed before leaving on departure day
3. Participant is certified medically unfit prior to the expedition
4. Full payment not made.

Medical Indemnity:
All participants are to declare any existing medical conditions to the organizer.
Woodlands Youth Club and its leaders shall not be held responsible for any consequences arising from existing medical condition(s) caused by the participant’s failure to be immunized as recommended by the club.

The 1 Star Kayaking Course (http://www.scf.org.sg/Awards/Personal1.html) spans over 2 days. At the end of the course, participants would learn technical skills such as planning a capsize, emptying water from kayak and other skills. Participants would also learn about the basic safety issues of kayaking.

Snippet about Perseids Meteor Shower:

The Perseid meteor shower is an annual meteor shower that is extremely regular in its timing and can potentially be visible for weeks in the late summer sky, depending on weather and location.

The Perseid meteor shower is named after the constellation Perseus, which is located in roughly the same point of the night sky where the Perseid meteor shower appears to originate from.

This is a useful naming convention, but not very accurate!

The source of the Perseid meteor shower is actually debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle. Every year, the earth passes through the debris cloud left by the comet when the earth’s atmosphere is bombarded by what is popularly known as “falling stars.”

Astronomy Conference is an annual astronomy outreach programme comprising of many types of activities, a forum and stargazing sessions, starting this year led by the Admiral Garden Astronomy Club (AGASTRO). This year’s programme is aimed at educating the public on Astronomy as well as to spread an appreciation for astronomy amongst the youths and to the astronomy clubs in Singapore.

This event Guest of Honour will be Dr Ng Eng Hen (tentative). Host MP will be Ms Ellen Lee (MP for Woodlands and advisor to Woodlands’ GRO)

It is expected to have over 1000 participants from schools and the public around Singapore for the pre-activities and the conference.
